These wines are wonderful expressions of their appellations.
Subtle
yet powerful, sexy, smooth and charming with laser-like precision. 100% Nebbiolo
grown at about 400 meters above sea-level in a mix of clay calcareous soils, the
wine sees 8-10 days on the skins in stainless steel, after which it is aged in
combination of botte, barriques and stainless-steel to maintain its fresh fruit
characteristics. This wine delivers ripe cherry and currants on the palate,
followed by hints of cocoa and tobacco. Finishes with slightly grippy, smooth
tannins and a hint of Serralunga-reminiscent chalky
minerality.
By the time these wines are rated by the critics, the winery has always
sold through the wines. This year, we decided to take the bull by the horns and
order some up.
It is hard to dispute that Nebbiolo is the king of Italian grape
varietals. As the sole varietal used in the production of Barolo and Barbaresco
as well as some other DOC's in the Piemonte region, the Nebbiolo grape produces
some of the most sought after wines in the world.
We have gone to visit Pasquale Pelissero winery a few times now. Each
time we try the wines and love them. Each time, we have waited too long to order
them and they have been sold out. We wanted to be sure that we did not make the
same mistake again as these are bottles that anyone who appreciates Nebbiolo
based wines, will love.
The Langhe is drinking wonderfully today,
but will benefit from a little time in the cellar. I would suggest that this
will be delicious any time in the next 7 years or so. The Barbaresco Bricco San
Guliano will cellar well up until 2025, or perhaps longer. Whatever you choose,
or if you choose both like i did, you will be very happy.
