Sylvia of Grandmas' Beach Treats Wins Silver in the Butter Tart Contest

Grandmas' Beach Treats is extremely excited to announce that our award winning butter tarts have won another award!!! The local store in Wasaga Beach has been making handmade butter tarts for the past seven years and they are now officially two-time award winning tarts, having won Bronze last year.
This past weekend, 60 of the stores' butter tarts were entered into the professional category to compete with over 40 other businesses across the province for the title 'Best Butter Tart in Ontario'. This years' contest was a freestyle competition and Grandma's Beach Treats entered two flavours; a Maple Bacon Peanut Butter Butter Tart and their now award winning Crumbly Caramel Apple Butter Tart, which was placed second in the competition. Grandma's Beach Treats came home with a cheque for $200, a silver medal but most importantly bragging rights!
"How exciting," said owner Sylvia Bray "we know we make a great tart based on the feedback from our happy customers, but it's so amazing to have the judges confirm just how good they really are!"
The 3rd annual Best Butter Tart Festival and Contest was marketed as the sweetest showdown of the year by a committee from the Town of Midland and the local BIA. They anticipated more than 80,000 butter tarts would be at the event and the majority of the vendors sold out early in the day. "We baked for 30 straight days and took well over 2,200 butter tarts which were SOLD OUT by 10:30am! We raced back to the store for a second load but sold out for the second time by 12:30pm," said Sylvia, "What an amazing day!"
Grandma's Beach Treats is located at 1014 Mosley Street (at 22nd) in Wasaga Beach and was named Wasaga Beach's Favourite Ice Cream shop in 2014, won Business of the Year in 2009, and had their butter tarts mentioned in a National Geographic travel article on things to eat in Georgian Bay in 2013.
A division of Baymark Holdings Inc. Grandma's helps customers satisfy their sweet tooth with homemade butter tarts, pies and other fresh baked goodies in addition to hand-scooped ice cream, homemade fudge and a wide selection of soft serve ice cream and yogurt treats, every day of the year! New in 2015 is Grandma's Coffee Shop so be sure to stop in for a hand crafted expresso, latte, cappuccino or a great selection of tea leaves for take-out or at-home brewing.

New growing home care agency believes private sector home care staff deserve higher pay

Canada is currently experiencing the highest growth rate for this age group since the late 1950s and early 1960s.  The children of this generation, dubbed “The sandwich generation,” are increasingly anxious about how to simultaneously care for their children while caring for their aging parents – many of whom want to age at home for as long as possible.

Mavencare, a new home care service for seniors, helps alleviate some of this anxiety by providing quality home care at a competitive rate that allows for higher salaries for PSWs. “We want to provide the best care possible.  To do this, we offer higher salaries to deserving health care workers and are able to retain the best of the best,” says James Cohen, Co-Founder of Mavencare. “We recognize that PSWs are undervalued and underpaid.  It is our belief that by combining technology with adequate salaries, we can modernize the home care service industry.”

Created by a team of elder care and technology experts, Mavencare provides technological monitoring services throughout the home care appointment.  Through the Mavencare app, selected family members receive regular updates, directly to their mobile phone.  These activity updates confirm that key tasks such as medication reminders and personal care services are completed.

Available now in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Calgary, Mavencare plans to expand service across North America this year.  https://mavencare.com/

Old Fashioned Onion Rings

http://allrecipes.com/video/923/old-fashioned-onion-rings/detail.aspx

Directions

  1. Heat the oil in a deep-fryer to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C).
  2. Separate the onion slices into rings, and set aside. In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt.
  3. Dip the onion slices into the flour mixture until they are all coated; set aside. Whisk the egg and milk into the flour mixture using a fork. Dip the floured rings into the batter to coat, then place on a wire rack to drain until the batter stops dripping. The wire rack may be placed over a sheet of aluminum foil for easier clean up. Spread the bread crumbs out on a plate or shallow dish. Place rings one at a time into the crumbs, and scoop the crumbs up over the ring to coat. Give it a hard tap as you remove it from the crumbs. The coating should cling very well. Repeat with remaining rings.
  4. Deep fry the rings a few at a time for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove to paper towels to drain. Season with seasoning salt, and serve.
