Tips from Susan Uram, Brand Manager, Olympic Exterior Stains to Turn Your Weathered Deck into an Inviting Space
Nothing says summer like BBQs, pool parties and relaxing out on your deck. Here are some helpful tips from Susan Uram, Brand Manager, Olympic Exterior Stains, to transform a weathered deck into an inviting summer escape.
Before pulling out patio furniture, check your deck for deterioration. Monitor exposed wooden surfaces for wear and tear. If your deck is in less-than optimal shape, you’ll need to prepare and clean it for staining.
2. Avoid using a power washer to clean your deck. Even the low-intensity models from home improvement stores are powerful enough to damage and gouge even the hardest of wood, if you don’t know how to properly use the equipment. Using a power washer can drive a lot of dirt and mildew into the wood when you power wash, so it’s best to simply hose off the deck with a garden hose.
3. Give your deck a facelift with a good cleaning using Olympic Deck Cleaner and apply a waterproof sealant or stain such as Olympic Exterior Stains’ Maximum line, designed to protect wood from water, mildew, scuff and UV damage.
4. It’s important to seal and protect it (even if it isn’t damaged) with an exterior wood stain to prevent damage and fading.
5. Enhance the beauty of your summer hangout by combining colours, plants and décor to achieve the perfect look. Olympic Exterior Stains has over 100 semi-transparent and solid-colour stains.
6. Identify the right type of stain by considering your patio furniture and the architectural details of your home such as stone or brick work. The stain colours you choose should complement your home’s existing features. As a guide, here is what to remember:
o Clear or tinted sealants allow the woodgrain to show through your finish providing a beautiful, natural look
o Semi-transparent stains contain additional pigment and come in a variety of colours that provide a wide range of options
o Solid colour stains provide a rich, opaque finish that allows the wood’s texture to show through
7. Don’t rush. Many deck owners hope to slap down stain and have a party the same night. If you expect the deck to look a certain way, you need to take the time to figure it out. And make sure to consider the whole deck. Harried homeowners usually forget to clean and maintain the underside of a raised deck in the rush to get the season underway.

Introducing the Intuitive Laundry Room
The “kitchen triangle” has long been known as the most efficient way to design a kitchen, and now the same ergonomic layout principles have been adapted for the laundry room. With a goal of simplifying the laundry process, Whirlpool Home Appliances and professional organizer Clare Kumar have developed an intuitive layout – that goes with their efficient machines – that helps get the laundry process done faster.
By organizing the laundry space into four zones – prep area, washer and dryer, folding counter and finishing centre – you create an intuitive flow that eases the laundry cycle.
For more information about how Whirlpool brand is bringing intuitive laundry to Canadians, and a chance to win a Smart & Chic laundry room makeover, visit www.facebook.com/WhirlpoolCanada.

Drink responsibly this summer – know your water
Drink responsibly this summer – know your water
When you pack the car with all your gear this summer in anticipation of the great-Canadian road-trip, there are likely a couple of things on your mind: Did I forget anything? When’s the next rest stop? And, when will the kids stop fighting? However, if you pass through small communities, you also need to be aware of any boil water advisories or warnings before you fill up your water bottles at the local watering hole. Health and Safety Watch, an organization dedicated to helping Canadians get the most relevant and accurate information on all types of health and safety recalls, warnings, and advisories now provides Canadians with up-to-date water advisory information to ensure you are as informed as possible.
Not all Canadian jurisdictions report drinking water advisories in the same way and a national advisory approach does not exist, so staying informed can be a significant challenge. To help keep Canadians up-to-date HSW monitors available electronic public health information sources and posts information on the HSW website, making it a central location to find important health and safety related information. Although HSW cannot guarantee 100% coverage, all community-based advisories that are identified are posted on the HSW website. By providing this information, HSW is filling a gap to ensure all Canadians have access to the latest water advisories and we can enjoy our summer vacations and travel.
Along with being informative, the site makes it convenient and easy to access the information. A mapping tab enables visitors to see multiple recalls and advisories on an interactive map, simply by typing in their current location. Specific icons will pop up, allowing you to find out what health alerts are affecting the community in question. HSW is also working to add water advisories associated with parks and other popular destinations for vacationers during the summer months.

Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists
Canada’s medical radiation technologists launch the Image of Care campaign
Ottawa, May 30, 2011 – This week, the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) and its provincial member associations launch a rebranding initiative that will change the way medical radiation technologists (MRTs) are recognized throughout the medical profession as well as by the general population, and bring a face to this often misunderstood profession.
Millions of patients come face-to-face with MRTs every year; however, the majority of Canadians are unable to identify them accurately as healthcare providers. The Image of Care campaign is designed to change that. The campaign is intended to bring awareness about the profession of medical radiation technologists, and position them as respected, caring professionals who are recognized within the healthcare system as well as by the public at large. The campaign celebrates Canada’s medical radiation technologist, who are the very image of care.
The Image of Care campaign launch will be staged as follows:
· Print advertisements appearing in the June issues of both Reader’s Digest and Selection magazines, on the newsstands the week of May 16th;
· Banner advertisements on the Reader’s Digest website throughout the next four weeks;
· The formal campaign launch on June 2nd at the CAMRT Annual General Conference in Saskatoon;
· The Image of Care website, a friendly place to find out more about who MRTs are, what they do, what to expect when you visit one and how you can launch your career in medical radiation technology; and
· A rebranding toolkit designed to provide organizations and individuals within the MRT profession with the necessary tools to conduct their own campaigns and bring awareness to the profession.

For information about CAMRT and its provincial member associations, visit http://www.camrt.ca/.
About CAMRT: Founded in 1942, the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) is a federation of ten provincial associations who share a common membership of over 11,000. CAMRT is the national certifying body for radiological technologists, radiation therapists, nuclear medicine technologists and magnetic resonance technologists and, as such, provides the national entry to practice certification examinations. The CAMRT is also the national professional association that represents and promotes the MRT profession and is an active participant in the Canadian health system. It offers quality professional development programs, advocates on behalf of the MRT profession, publishes the Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences, conducts an annual conference and develops and promotes statements of professional best practice.
