National Post Article re Canadian Doctor Shortage -the truth

National Post · Monday, Feb. 28, 2011
Re: Good News About Family Doctors, Feb. 24.

It is a little-known fact that the shortage of doctors is a direct result of deliberate government policy. Nearly two decades ago the provincial health ministers commissioned two economists, Morris Barer and Greg Stoddart, to provide a report on health care economics. In B.C., we had the Seaton Commission. It was as if a doctor represented a calculable cost and by limiting the number of doctors the overall cost of health care could be constrained.

The result was a decision to limit access to training positions funded by provincial governments. Positions in medical schools were limited, even cut. Medical school graduates found that there was an insufficient number of training positions in Canadian hospitals available for them to pursue their chosen focus in medicine. Some were forced to go to outside Canada.

Meanwhile, trainees from overseas were accepted as residents, providing they paid their way, when a Canadian graduate would have been unable to secure that position. The high quality of medical care in Canada is maintained by the doctors, nurses and others in hospitals in spite of the contrary efforts of government and owes nothing to the rather cynical politicians. Look it up, I was there.

The Shape of Weight Loss-CIBO Clinic – Lose Weight for Life

The Shape of Weight Loss CIBO Clinic – Lose Weight for Life

For many, year after year, New Year's resolutions include the desire for an improved appearance and topping the list is weight loss.

By now those resolutions are fading from the minds of most. How to make that resolution a reality – you need a source for help – ongoing help.

The risks of being overweight and the wish to achieve better health and an improved appearance can drive depression at any time of the year, leaving you immobilized. The daunting journey to achieve weight loss can be overwhelming; especially after endless failed attempts at diet routines.

Good information can help you make the choice for personal change. You also need on-going support to strengthen determination, plus, you need to be able to share and communicate openly with your support team.

A feature on look good options is the CIBO Clinic - the Canadian Institute of Bariatric Options. Their slogan is meaningful "Lose Weight for Life".

The CIBO support team is unmatched……they don't just claim to have experience…they do. Tom Saridis, Founder & CEO of The Canadian Institute of Bariatric Options, CIBO Clinic, has experienced weight-loss surgery himself. Tom underwent adjustable gastric lap-banding weight loss surgery in 2006 and has lost and maintained a 280 lb weight loss. Tom describes his experience as, "I realized that having the band put in wasn't a cure for my obesity – nothing is – but it was a great tool for helping me change the way I eat. I worked hard to make the changes the band required."

Tom formed CIBO Clinic from his own weight loss journey and the feelings of "What happens now?"

Today, five years later and 280 lbs. lighter Tom is committed to helping others achieve the same weight loss success…and…enjoy a better quality of life. Tom maintains, "Anyone who has ever struggled with their weight like I have knows losing it is a lot more complicated than just cutting back on food and getting some exercise. It's about changing the way you eat, the way you think – and the way you live your life. I couldn't have made those changes without help."

The health risks of obesity such as type 2 diabetes or hypertension are greater than the risks of gastric banding surgery because severe obesity is a chronic frequently progressive, life threatening disease with many known health risks.

In most cases a potential candidate for lap-band surgery would have to be at least fifty pounds above their ideal body weight or have a body mass index of thirty-five or as low as thirty with pre-existing health conditions.

The Canadian Medical Association Journal recommends bariatric or weight loss surgery as an acceptable option for people for whom all other conventional weight loss methods have failed.

The CIBO Clinic in Toronto (Canadian Institute of Bariatric Options) stresses a lifetime of changes; "Eating habits can change, the band is a great tool to help you make that change", explains Tom "These days, life has become about quality, not quantity,"
When Tom states, "I know what you mean" it is not a put-off comment he actually does know and can relate to you.

Worried about what others think? Think for yourself, new book advises

Karen Sala examines how others influence our life choices, and what we can do about it in "The Art of Finding Yourself, At Any Age"

BARRIE, Ontario  February 2011 - - Too many of us are swayed by what others think and say, notes author Karen Sala, and too often we lose focus of ourselves in the process. This can give way to mimicking the habits of those we associate with, which over time can hinder our life's purpose and progress. In "The Art of Finding Yourself, At Any Age" (ISBN 1450585485), Sala attempts to explain how this fear of the unknown can cause people to go astray.

About the Author:

Karen Sala was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She started writing as a child, and has since developed several books for eventual publication. As author of "Relationship Purgatory, for Two," and "The Gasping," Sala has pursued her lifelong goals in establishing herself as an independent writer.

Olivari(R) Mediterranean Olive Oil Wins Product of the Year

More than 60,000 consumer votes give olive oil first place in cooking category ROME, N.Y., Feb. 9, 2011 /-- Sovena USA is proud to announce that its new consumer brand, Olivari Mediterranean Olive Oil, secured first place in the cooking category of the 2011 Product of the Year awards due to its patented Pop-Up Pourer. The way consumers use olive oil will never be the same again.

The award-winning Pop-Up Pourer springs from the bottle as soon as the cap is removed to reveal a professional-style pourer that delivers a clean, drip-free pour of olive oil. When the cap is screwed back onto the bottle, the Pop-Up Pourer retracts to seal in freshness. The Pop-Up Pourer can be found exclusively in bottles of Olivari up to the 34oz size.

Product of the Year is the world's largest consumer survey on innovation in consumer packaged goods. In the U.S., 60,493 consumers participated in the survey by TNS and only 22 products made the cut. Olivari® Mediterranean Olive Oil is the only olive oil to win the prestigious award in its 25-year history. Olivari joins a roster of winners including products from Procter & Gamble, Nestle, SC Johnson, Pepsi and Johnson & Johnson.
Here's what TNS respondents said about Olivari:

"This makes using olive oil so simple. Being able to drizzle without getting oil all over your hands is great."

"The Olivari spout that retracts back into the lid is an innovative, simple idea. (It) not only allows for measured pouring but also protects the oil from oxidation."
"I cook a lot with olive oil and having that pourer is an ingenious idea."

"Love, love, love the idea of the pop up spout!!!"
Manufactured by Sovena USA in Rome, NY, Olivari emphasizes the Mediterranean way of life, reflected in a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Often, consumers transfer olive oil into cruets or secondary bottles with screw-on metal pourers like ones found on restaurant tables. This process can not only be messy and cumbersome, but also increases air exposure, which can cause the oil to degrade more quickly.

"As we developed Olivari Mediterranean, we specifically created it with our custom Pop-Up Pourer to make it quick and easy for our consumer to use the product as well as preserve the highest quality of our olive oil," said Eryn Balch, marketing manager at Sovena USA.
Olivari Mediterranean Olive Oil can be found in Walmart Supercenters nationwide and in select chains throughout the Northeast.

About Olivari Mediterranean Olive Oil: Olivari selects premium olive oils from the heart of the Mediterranean that meet the highest specifications for quality and taste. Like fine wine, every Olivari® Mediterranean Olive Oil is carefully blended to deliver a subtle, fruity aroma and fresh flavor that reflects the wholesome goodness of an authentic Mediterranean diet. Only Olivari offers the exclusive, patented Pop-Up Pourer. For more information visit http://www.olivarimediterranean.com.

New U.S. Dietary Guidelines: Make Your Calories Count with Nutrient-Dense Peanuts

The new 2010 Dietary Guidelines address the American obesity epidemic by telling consumers to "maintain calorie balance over time" and to do it by "consuming nutrient-dense foods" such as peanuts. When maintaining proper calorie balance, refined grains, solid fats, and added sugars should be replaced with nutrient dense foods. The new Dietary Guidelines explains, "A healthy eating pattern ... emphasizes nutrient-dense foods - vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fat-free or low-fat milk products, seafood, lean meats and poultry, eggs, beans and peas, and nuts and seeds."

According to USDA data, peanuts and peanut butter are 67% of the nuts eaten in the US. Consumer data highlights taste, health benefits, convenience, and affordability as the reason. Peanuts are technically a legume and contain more protein than any other nut.

According to the new Guidelines, "Consumption of a balanced variety of protein foods can contribute to improved nutrient intake and health benefits. For example, moderate evidence indicates that eating peanuts and certain tree nuts reduces risk factors for cardiovascular disease when consumed as part of a diet that is nutritionally adequate and within calorie needs." Research shows that a small, daily serving of peanuts or peanut butter can cut the risk of heart disease in half.

Peanuts and peanut butter are placed in the nutrient dense category because for 160 calories, they provide hard-to-get nutrients such as dietary fiber, potassium, folate, vitamin E, thiamin, and magnesium. There are numerous studies showing that peanuts help manage weight because of their high satiety value and consumers don't tire of them. Multiple studies show that participants who ate peanuts and peanut butter had a lower Body Mass Index (BMI) and more nutritious diets.

The Peanut Institute is a non-profit organization that supports nutrition research and develops educational programs to encourage healthful lifestyles. Learn more about peanuts and health at
