Know the ingredients in your personal care products

Better products are truthful in their marketing claims and free of potentially worrisome ingredients. Some products might make claims like "gentle" or "natural," but since the government does not require safety testing, personal care product manufacturers can use almost any chemical they want, regardless of risks. How to read a label

Every personal care product must list its ingredients. Here's how to navigate the label:
Start at the end, with preservatives. Avoid:
Words ending in "paraben" DMDM hydantoin Imidazolidinyl urea Methylchloroisothiazolinone Methylisothiazolinone Triclosan Triclocarban Triethanolamine (or "TEA")

Check the beginning of the ingredients lists, where soaps, surfactants, and lubricants show up. Try to avoid ingredients that start with "PEG" or have an "-eth" in the middle (e.g., sodium laureth sulfate).

Read the ingredients in the middle. Look for these words: "FRAGRANCE," "FD&C," or "D&C."

Earth Hour 2011

In an effort to fight global warming, at 8:30 p.m on March 26, 2011, Earth Hour goes global, with cities and towns around the world taking stand, on the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, and millions of people uniting to turn the tide on global warming.
Mayor Cal Patterson and members of the Wasaga Beach Town Council extend this challenge to the Wasaga Beach community by encouraging businesses and households to turn their lights out for one hour between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Mayor Patterson is encouraging businesses who are not in a position to turn their lights off completely due to operational requirements to reduce and conserve power between the hours of 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. in any other way possible.
Mayor Patterson commented that “given the impacts we can visibly see of global warming and the studies undertaken to understand the reasons behind this environmental threat, it is important for the Town of Wasaga Beach to be an active participant in this challenge and extend the challenge to all residents of Wasaga Beach. I personally encourage everyone to get involved with this important environmental initiative.”

In an effort to support and promote Earth Hour, the Town of Wasaga Beach is running an Earth Hour promotion where an energy efficient gift basket will be given away to one resident of Wasaga Beach. In order to participate in the promotion, send an e-mail to events@wasagabeach.com confirming what you will be doing to participate in Earth Hour. The winning name will be drawn on March 28, 2011.

One of the fastest and easiest ways to learn more about Earth Hour is by visiting http://www.earthhourcanada.org/
This website has been created to assist with spreading the word about Earth Hour and is an efficient way to get involved and help make a difference to our plant.

National Poison Prevent Week - How to Keep our Kids Safe

National Poison Prevent Week - How to Keep our Kids Safe

Health and Safety Watch would like to remind you that this week is National Poison Prevention Week. This year’s theme is “Locked out of Reach” and focuses on protecting children under six, who are the most at risk for accidental poisoning.

Each year an estimated five Canadian children under 14 die and another 1,280 end up in the hospital with serious injuries due to poisoning. In BC, poisoning is one of the top three causes of death.

Ways to reduce the risk of poisoning and important facts are currently available at Healthandsafetywatch.com.
Parents need to remember that it is not only prescription drugs and medications that they need to keep safely locked away from children. Pamela Fuselli, Executive Director of Safe Kids Canada, explains that “…household cleaners, garden chemicals, personal care products, plants and art supplies are other common causes of poisoning.”

Health and Safety Watch provides critical public health information in real-time. Designed for individuals and families, this service provides users with news about food, water and drugs, product recalls, disease outbreaks, and many other concerns.
